Where It Started

I have been collecting sports cards since I was 8 years old. As a kid I used to leave school at lunchtime and walk across the street to buy pizza and packs of sports cards. I’d then go back to school & trade my newfound cards with my friends at recess. As I got older I started attending sports card shows in the late ’90s into the early 2000s, between the ages of 11 and 15. I’d often be the only person under the age of 40 at these shows, and I was doing it before social media and sports cards became “cool”. I learned a lot of valuable lessons on both cards & life in my interactions as a young man with dealers & others attending these shows. I still see some of these dealers on the scene now, 25+ years later, and always have major nostalgia for those days when I do.

Back in the Game

Like many, I stopped collecting at some point in high school & cards became a bit of a distant memory for me. I got back into it in 2017 when my girlfriend purchased me a box of cards & we hit an autograph of our favorite player at the time, Noah Syndergaard. I had been a big Mets fan since I can remember & she was just getting into baseball. We went to her first live baseball game with tickets she was given at her job about a month in advance, and it just so happened to be Noah Syndergaard’s home debut as a member of the Mets, right after he was called up from the minors. He came out of the gates strong and helped pitch the Mets to the World Series that year; needless to say, we were big fans of “Thor”, as he would become nicknamed shortly after his debut. Hitting his autograph in the first box of cards I’d opened in 10+ years definitely helped open the floodgates for me to get back into the hobby.

Hooked on Box Breaks

After opening that box I started reading & researching all about sports cards & found this new innovation called “box breaks” on YouTube. It seems simple enough: someone opens up the cards & streams the content for others to watch. This had me hooked early. To me, a big part of the fun in collecting had always been opening packs & boxes, as you never knew what could be inside. I started watching these breaks pretty often. I wasn’t even buying in; I’d just watch to see what would be hit. When I finally bought in for the first time, I bought into a random serial number break of 2017 Diamond Icons. There were 25 spots, as all cards were #’d to 25 or less, & you would get a random number. When the breaker ran the random I got #2, & couldn’t believe my luck when the breaker later opened the box & hit a Mike Trout auto #’d 2/10. Needless to say, I was hooked yet again.

Our First Live Break

After some time of watching breaks, buying into them & buying boxes, I started thinking I might be able to do this thing myself. I decided to give box breaking a chance in 2019 & did my first ever live break: 6 Hobby Boxes of 2018-19 Select NBA. I had a blast doing it (even though I took a loss on the break) and will never forget the buyer for the Mavericks (the most expensive team in the break) complaining about how poorly he did, as he spent over $100 and only hit a few silver rookie cards of Luka Doncic & maybe 5 or 6 base rookies. At their peak about 3 years later, those silvers in a PSA 10 were selling for $4,000 each & the base rookies in a 10 were doing around $1,000 each. And that doesn’t include all of the Jalen Brunson rookie cards he hit, which at the time were likely thought of as throwaways. Just goes to show you how crazy this hobby is!
